Fracture Care
A fracture is defined as loss of continuity in a bone. You may be more familiar with the terms, “break, or broken bone.” This usually results from trauma or stress applied to a bone. There are many different types of fractures that can occur within the body. When a fracture occurs, the bones may stay aligned or deviate from their normal alignment.
When alignment is preserved, fracture can be treated with casting and/or immobilization. If the bones “displace” or move out of their normal alignment, it may be necessary to surgically correct the misalignment.
This is known as open reduction with internal fixation. Typically this is done with metal plates and screws or special prostheses. Typically fractures need to be immobilized for approximately 4-6 weeks. After this time therapy can be begun to regain motion and strength.
