Sprains and Strains
Sprains and strains are some of the most common orthopedic injuries seen. They may involve any area where tendons or ligaments are located.
They can be quite painful, sometimes more so than a fracture. Sprains and strains are typically treated with, “RICE,” rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Usually a brace, or splint is used to keep the joint immobilized for a short amount of time.
Physical therapy is used to get the patient back to the pre-injury status. Sprains and strains may take 8-12 weeks to heal. Multiple sprains in the same area may warrant further imaging to assess stability.
