Tendon and Ligament Reconstruction
Tendons are bands of fibrous tissue that connect muscles to bones. Ligaments are bands of fibrous tissue that connect bone to bone. These fibrous tissue bands can sometimes become interrupted in the setting of trauma.
Common injuries include: Achilles tendon rupture, patellar tendon rupture, quadriceps tendon rupture, and other smaller ligament or tendon complex ruptures located within the ankle, wrist, and hand. Sometimes when these tendons or ligaments rupture, functional ability is lost and they need to be repaired.
These types of surgeries, typically use suture to tie the disrupted pieces back together. Immobilization is needed in the form of cast or splint after any such procedure for a period of approximately one month. After that time, physical therapy is begun for complete rehabilitation.
